Court dismisses lawsuit over domestic partner benefits at Miami University
A three-judge appeals court in Ohio unanimously ruled to dismiss a lawsuit seeking to prevent Miami University from offering domestic partner benefits to its faculty and staff, the Chronicle of Higher Education reported.

The lawsuit, brought by a state representative and previously dismissed from a lower court, alleges the policy violates an amendment to the Ohio Constitution that prohibits state agencies from creating or recognizing “a legal status for relationships of unmarried individuals that intends to approximate the design, qualities, significance or effect of marriage.”

Private-equity investors buy another international university
In another sign of private-equity investors’ interest in higher-education investing, a private-equity firm recently acquired Schiller International University, a family-owned college of about 1,200 students based in Florida, according to the Chronicle of Higher Education.

The private-equity arm of Knowledge Investment Partners, based in Cleveland, Ohio, bought the university, which has campuses in six countries. The company declined to disclose the purchase price or other details about the transaction.

Schiller’s main programs are in business, international relations and diplomacy, international hotel and tourism management, and information-technology management.
