Libraries observe Constitution Day
An exhibition featuring original manuscripts and correspondence written by William Few and Abraham Baldwin, close personal friends who were Georgia’s two signers of the U.S. Constitution,
is on display in observance of the 220th anniversary of Constitution Day, Sept. 17.
In May of 1787, 12 states sent delegates to Philadelphia to propose amendments to the Articles of Confederation, under which the 13 original states had been operating. After much debate and compromise the United States Constitution was completed on Sept. 17, 1787.
Documents relating to the two men are part of the collections at the Hargrett Rare Book and Manuscript Library, located in the Main library, where the exhibition is on display through
Sept. 28. The UGA Libraries recently added to those collections when it acquired more than 250 letters of Few, his wife, Catherine, and their daughter, Frances.
Baldwin’s papers are located in the UGA
Archives of the Hargrett Library.
Included in the exhibition are documents relating to life and the political climate in Georgia during that period, such as the Siege of Savannah, in which the casualties of the French allies were higher than that of the Americans; the scandal of the Yazoo Land Fraud; religion in Georgia camp meetings; and the establishment of the University of Georgia, also known as Franklin College.
The Hargrett Library is open Monday through Thursday 8 a.m.–5 p.m. and Saturdays 1–5 p.m. The Hargrett Library is closed on all home football game days.
Student Learning Center to open for
24 hours on trial basis for fall semester
The Student Learning Center has joined Snelling Dining Commons in offering students 24-hour access. On Sept. 17, areas of the SLC will remain open from Sunday at 11 a.m. through Friday at 7 p.m. on a trial basis for the fall semester. The SLC will continue the regular schedule for Saturday.
“Students have expressed their desire to increase the Student Learning Center hours to provide unlimited access to this valuable campus resource. We believe this access is valuable to increase the academic goals and success of our students,” said Provost Arnett C. Mace Jr.
The second, third and fourth floors of the east wing (stadium side) of the SLC, which include individual and group study areas, computer workstations and vending facilities, will remain open during the extended hours. Entry and exit after
2 a.m. is limited to the colonnade entrance on the east side of the second floor.
Building use, maintenance and costs associated with the extended schedule will be evaluated to determine the operating schedule for spring semester.
1980 Championship Year Revisited exhibition on display at Georgia Center
A pictorial exhibit of UGA football by photojournalist Wingate Downs, 1980 Championship Year Revisited, is on display at the Georgia Center for Continuing Education Conference Center and Hotel through Sept. 30.
Open to the public, the exhibit is on display
in the Georgia Center’s Hill Atrium, located at 1197 S. Lumpkin St.
The exhibit profiles UGA’s 1980 national championship football team. The collection tells the story of that successful football season and the players who made it possible. Downs captured the excitement of this legendary year of UGA football including Herschel Walker’s first day of practice, his touchdown at the Sugar Bowl and fans watching home games from the railroad tracks.
An Athens resident, Downs is a graduate of UGA’s Henry W. Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication. |
