Jeanne Barsanti, professor emeritus of small animal medicine, received the 2007 American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine’s Distinguished Service Award at the 25th annual ACVIM Forum. This award honors ACVIM diplomats who have provided exemplary and sustained service in the capacity of elected office or voluntary service.
Physical Plant employees Joe Covert (grounds keeper III, grounds landscaping), Jason Hubbard (grounds keeper II, grounds landscaping) and Leila Y. Shutt (horticulturist, grounds landscaping) successfully completed the certified aborist examination administered through the International Society of Arboriculture and the local chapter of the ISA.
The purpose of the certification program is to improve the level of knowledge and standard of practice within the tree-care profession.

The ISA is a scientific and educational organization devoted to the dissemination of information in the care and preservation of shade and ornamental trees.
Bert DeSimone, director of communications for Enterprise Information Technology Services, was invited to speak at Gettsyburg College on the subject of Web portals. He also made a presentation at the Educause Southeast conference on the same topic and was informed that an article published a few years ago on a topic related to Web portals will be reprinted in a magazine in India.

Scott A. Merkle, professor of forest biotechnology, has been honored by the Society of American Foresters, the industry’s national professional society, with the Barrington Moore Award, which recognizes outstanding achievement in biological research leading to the advancement of forestry.
Leslie Steffe, Distinguished Research Professor of mathematics education, received the inaugural Senior Scholar Award from the Special Interest Group for Research in Mathematics Education of the American Educational Research Association.
Steffe received an engraved plaque, a $500 stipend and travel expense reimbursement to attend the AERA annual meeting in Chicago last spring. He presented an invited paper to the SIG/RME about basic problems in mathematics education research.
The award recognizes the programmatic research and research-mentoring work of a senior scholar in the field of mathematics education.

Nancy P. Thompson, head of independent and distance learning and e-core administrative services programs at the Georgia Center for Continuing Education Conference Center and Hotel, was recently awarded the 2007 Nofflet Williams Service Award from the National University Telecommunications Network.
The award recognizes an individual who exhibits commitment to providing service to those in the field.
