Arch Foundation adds two trustees
The University of Georgia Arch Foundation has added two members to its board of trustees.
Keith Mason of Atlanta and Stan Shelton of Boston, Mass., were elected to four-year terms on the board at the trustees’ quarterly meeting held in Athens Oct. 5.
Mason is a partner in the Atlanta law firm of McKenna Long & Aldridge. Previously he was chief of staff to former Gov. Zell Miller and, as White House deputy director of intergovernmental affairs, was President Bill Clinton’s chief liaison with the nation’s governors. Mason received a business administration degree from UGA in 1982 and a law degree in 1985.
Shelton is executive vice president of State Street Global Markets and a founding partner of State Street Associates. He oversees all of State Street’s global trading activities and is also responsible for State Street’s institutional e-Finance network and the firm’s Global Link network. State Street Global Markets has broker/dealer and bank branch networks in 11 countries and has more than 1,000 employees. Shelton received a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree in public administration from UGA and a master’s degree in finance from Boston College.
The Arch Foundation is UGA’s cooperative organization that supports the university’s academic mission and assists with development and fund-raising activities.
Project Vote Smart’s Voter Defense System to stop at UGA on Oct. 17
Project Vote Smart will bring its Voter Defense System to UGA Oct. 17 from 10 a.m.–3 p.m. to teach the public how to defend against political campaign misinformation. The motor coach will be located on campus at the intersection of Carlton Street and D.W. Brooks Drive.
All members of the public, in addition to the student body, are invited to visit. Parking is available at the Carlton Street Parking Deck or the South Campus Parking Deck.
Project Vote Smart is a national system that provides information on candidates’ voting records, speeches, campaign finances and interest group ratings. The information is free, unbiased and available to anyone.
Visitors to the motor coach will begin their experience by watching a short video about Project Vote Smart. Following the video, guests will be given access to a laptop computer and taught the different methods they can use to defend themselves against misinformation they may receive in the upcoming elections.
A national research organization, Project Vote Smart was founded by national leaders such as Jimmy Carter, Gerald Ford, John McCain and Geraldine Ferraro. It is funded entirely through foundation grants and the individual contributions of its 45,000 members.
Campaign for Charities kicks off Oct. 18
UGA’s annual Campaign for Charities will get under way Oct. 18 with a kickoff breakfast in Georgia Hall of the Tate Student Center. The event runs from 7:45–9 a.m.
At the breakfast, university vice presidents, deans, directors and department heads will receive packets of pre-printed pledge cards and other campaign materials for distribution in their respective areas.
The fundraising goal for this year’s campaign is $425,000 and the campaign hopes to up participation to 27 percent of faculty and staff, up 3 percent from last year.
This year’s campaign chairman is Maurice Daniels, dean of the School of Social Work.
As in the past, the university will conduct a single campaign for charitable contributions to United Way agencies, Georgia Share members and other organizations approved through the State Charitable Contributions Program. |
