Use water more efficiently
With Athens and the surrounding counties under Level 4 water restrictions and around-the-clock bans on outdoor residential water use, conserving water at UGA and in the surrounding community has become a mandate. To use water more efficiently, UGA offers these tips, and more, which are available online at www.uga.edu/aboutUGA/water_tips.html:
• Keep a pitcher of water in the refrigerator instead of running the tap for cold drinks, so that every drop goes down you and not the drain.
• Use a commercial car wash that recycles water.
• Use a compost pile instead of a garbage disposal to dispose of food waste.
• Eat leftovers to minimize water used for food preparation.
• When washing dishes by hand, don’t let the water run while rinsing. Fill one sink with wash water and the other with rinse water.
• Run your washing machine and dishwasher only when they are full.
• Wash your produce in the sink or a pan that is partially filled with water instead of running water from the tap.
• Replace your showerhead with a water-efficient one.
• Collect the water you use for rinsing produce and reuse it to water houseplants.
• Keep your showers to under 5 minutes.
