College of Pharmacy will hold Nov. 2 groundbreaking for new addition
The formal groundbreaking ceremony to mark the start of construction on the $29.7 million, 88,000-square-foot addition to the College of Pharmacy will be held Nov. 2 at 2 p.m. The site is immediately south of the College of Pharmacy on D. W. Brooks Mall.

Oxford University lecturer to speak

Susan Gillingham, lecturer at Worcester College of Oxford University, will lecture Nov. 1 at 4 p.m. in Room 265 of Park Hall. Sponsored by the UGA at Oxford Study-Abroad Program, Gillingham’s lecture is entitled “Reading the Hebrew Bible with an Eye to ‘Then’ and ‘Now’: Psalm 8 as a Paradigmatic Text.”

A well-known scholar in reception history and psalmody, Gillingham has taught at UGA at Oxford since the mid 1990s, introducing more than 300 students to the historical, literary and theological issues in biblical texts. Throughout most of this time she has been researching the reception history of the Psalms for a volume, entitled The Psalms through the Centuries, to be published in December. She will present the birth and development of one particular psalm from historical, literary and theological perspectives.

‘Civil Gideon’ moot court to examine legal aid for poor people in civil cases
The School of Law’s Civil Clinics will sponsor a moot court on “Civil Gideon,” which will examine whether the Constitution requires a lawyer for poor people in civil cases involving fundamental legal needs, such as shelter. The argument will take place Nov. 1 in the Dean Rusk Hall Courtroom from 4:30–6 p.m. It is open to the public.

Gerald R. Weber of the Southern Center for Human Rights and Timothy W. Floyd, a faculty member at the Mercer University School of Law, will argue the hypothetical case to a panel of judges that includes Athens-Clarke County Chief Magistrate Judge Patricia Barron, Athens-Clarke County attorney William C. Berryman Jr. and UGA law professors Erica J. Hashimoto and Russell C. Gabriel.

In August, the American Bar Association issued a declaration calling for the recognition of a right to counsel for poor litigants in civil cases involving fundamental legal needs. This mock trial responds to that declaration, according to Alexander Scherr, associate professor and director of Civil Clinics.

“We hope to raise awareness about this issue and to educate others on the law surrounding the matter,” Scherr said.

A group discussion will follow the mock trial. All attendees are invited to participate. For attorneys, continuing legal education credit is available.

Henry Kamen to give Fawkes Lecture
Was 1588 Queen Elizabeth’s greatest moment of triumph? Or have we been misled by royal propagandists—not to mention the new Cate Blanchett film? At 4:30 p.m. on Nov. 7 in 265 Park Hall, Henry Kamen will deliver this year’s Guy Fawkes Lecture entitled, “Elizabeth I: The Not-So-Golden Age.” Sponsored by the British and Irish Studies Program, the English department and the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences, the lecture and the reception following it are open to the public.

Kamen’s books include Early Modern European Society, Who’s Who in Europe, 1450-1750, Empire: How Spain Became a World Power, 1492-1763 and most recently, The Disinherited: The Exiles Who Created Spanish Culture. He is a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society and emeritus professor of the Higher Council for Scientific Research in Barcelona.
