Tango Buenos Aires will perform on Nov. 18 in Hodgson Concert Hall
The Performing Arts Center presents Tango Buenos Aires Nov. 18 at 7:30 p.m. in Hodgson Concert Hall. Tickets, $28 and $23, are half price for UGA students with a valid ID. Discounts are available for groups.

Tango Buenos Aires has become one of Argentina’s greatest cultural exports, known throughout the Americas, Europe and the Far East as the most authentic and uncompromising representative of the tango. The company’s Athens program is entitled The Four Seasons: Passion and Sensuality of the Tango Art Form from the Streets to the Ballroom.

Tango Buenos Aires was created for the Jazmines Festival at the famous Buenos Aires cabaret Michelangelo by renowned composer and tango director Osvaldo Requena.

In his notes about the origins of the tango, pianist Cristian Zárate writes: “The Argentine tango has a mixture of African and Spanish antecedents and also a strong influence from the Argentine milonga, which is sung by Gauchos, the Argentine ‘cowboys.’ In its beginnings, the tango was an ill-famed dance, being very fashionable in dance halls and cabarets, and also because the choreography called for the couple to hold each other very close. Tango choreography allows for a lot of creativity, requiring breaks in the rhythm and perfect coordination between the dancers.”

Tango Buenos Aires showcases a troupe of colorfully costumed dancers (left), along with a singer and onstage band — including two musicians playing the bandoneón, which is an accordion similar to the concertina and is considered the tango’s signature instrument. The ensemble is regarded as the world’s most seasoned and authentic tango company.

Art exhibitions.
FindIt: Five Years of Field Survey. Through Nov. 29. Opening reception: Nov. 16, 4–6 p.m. Circle Gallery, G14 Caldwell Hall. Sponsored by the School of Environment and Design, the FindIt Program, Georgia Transmission Corp., the State Historic Preservation Office and the Center for Community Design and Preservation.

The show will exhibit images of historic resources in 20 Georgia counties. Master’s degree candidates in historic preservation and landscape architecture have documented cemeteries, houses, outbuildings and other unique sites that characterize the rural South.

disPlacements: Georgia Arc
is on display at the Lamar Dodd School of Art’s Broad Street Gallery Nov. 15–Dec. 14. An opening reception will be held Nov. 15 from 6–8 p.m.

The exhibition is a collaboration between R.G. Brown III, associate professor of sculpture, Ervan Garrison, head of UGA’s anthropology department, Kent Schneider, archaeologist with the USDA Forest Service and adjunct professor of anthropology, and Jessica Cook, a graduate student in anthropology.

This collaboration between the visual arts and archaeological geophysics is a series of imaged mappings created when scientists used advanced technologies to remotely sense Brown’s original sculpture embedded underground.

The exhibition’s title, disPlacements: Georgia Arc, refers to both the abstract arc-shaped wood and metal sculpture created by Brown, designed after artisanal fishing boats in Ghana, as well as to the method in which the sculpture, shown above, is placed into the ground, displacing red Georgia earth much as a boat displaces water.
