Research study: Low-income students are scarce at top universities
Research done by The Journal of Blacks in Higher Education and echoed by The Chronicle of Higher Education indicates that top-ranking universities and liberal arts colleges have seen declines in enrollment by low-income students. The Journal found that 20 top universities saw a decline from 1983 to 2006 in the percentage of their students receiving federal Pell grants, which serve needy pupils. Some institutions saw declines in their low-income enrollments even after pumping large sums of money into new programs geared toward the needy.

Jobs abound for historians
The American Historical Association estimates that, for the third year in a row, job openings for historians will outnumber the number of new Ph.D.s in 2008. The association’s magazine, Perspectives, lists more than 1,000 new jobs in the field. The increase in openings, however, doesn’t necessarily mean that every new doctorate holder will find a position. In some specialties within the discipline, there are too many would-be professors to go around, The Chronicle of Higher Education reported. While in some other specialties, there are large gaps. In American history, for instance, there were one-third less job listings than the number of new doctorates awarded the year before.
