Novel explores family’s struggles, triumphs
The Children of Shahida: A Novel follows the lives and experiences of three generations of the Solomon family, a Christian family with a Muslim name. The book explores the personal struggles and triumphs of the grandfather, Rashid; father, Bashir; and son, Tyab, from India to the U.S.
Author Anandam Kavoori, associate professor in the Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication, focuses on the family’s daily routines and the effects that their religious beliefs and Indian heritage have concerning American and Indian cultures.
While exploring the individuality of each character, Kavoori also addresses immigration issues and the constant conflict between religion and today’s society.
The book has been heralded by one of Pakistan’s most well-known authors, Bapsi Sidhwa, who wrote Cracking India, as a “joy to read. A charming, wise and endearing novel.”
Kavoori also has written a book of poems, A Road-Map for America, which focuses on war and journalism. The Children of Shahida is his first novel. |
