University, community come together to honor King's legacy

The university and the Athens-area community will celebrate the life and legacy of the late Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. with a series of events that conclude Jan. 26.

The Georgia Museum of Art will screen the 35-minute documentary I Have a Dream. . . The Life of Martin Luther King Jr. through Jan. 31 at its Dudley AV Theatre.

On Jan. 22, the OneWorld Multicultural Community International Dinner will be held at 6 p.m. in the Student Learning Center. The event is free, but seating is limited. For more information, contact Vanessa Smith at (706) 425-3098.

Later that day, UGA employees Melissa Shivers, Jill Severn and Sharon Gibson will moderate a forum entitled “Racial and Ethnic Tensions: What Should We Do?” in Room 407 of Memorial Hall. The event runs from 7–9 p.m. For information, call Severn at
(706) 542-5766.

Preview presentations of two new UGA projects focused on the civil rights movement will air at 7 p.m. Jan. 23 at the Athens-Clarke County Library. “Civil Rights Digital Library and Freedom on Film: Civil Rights in Georgia” are collaborative projects whose leaders will be on hand to speak about their relevance.

On Jan. 24 at noon in Adinkra Hall, Memorial Hall, Joyce Bell, assistant professor in the Institute for African-American Studies and the sociology department, chairs a panel discussion entitled “New Directions in Civil Rights Studies: Women Foot Soldiers of the Movement.” She will be joined by Vicki Crawford, associate dean in the division of humanities and professor of history at Clark Atlanta University, and Juanita Johnson-Bailey in UGA’s adult education department.

At 7 p.m. the same day, the First AME Church at 521 N. Hull St. in Athens will host Gospelfest: Honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

The celebration concludes with the Black Affairs Council Unity Ball from 7–11 p.m. Jan. 26 at the Classic Center. For information or tickets, call (706) 542-5773.
