Nominations now being accepted for student employee of the year

They drive campus transit buses through narrow parking lots, help clean out the horse barns, answer the phones and help out when the computers crash, and now the Career Center thinks it’s time that student workers receive a little recognition.

The Career Center is sponsoring the Student Employee of the Year competition for student workers who go the extra mile and make their campus departments better places to work. Now in its second year at UGA, the competition is currently seeking nominations to find the very best student worker out of the 5,300 on-campus student employee workforce.

“We want to recognize our students because they do so much for the university,” said Scott Williams, executive director of the Career Center. “Without them, many of our UGA departments wouldn’t be able to function.”

Due Feb. 18, nomination forms are available online (www.career.uga.edu/studentemployeeoftheyear.html). A selection committee representing a cross section of UGA departments, will review the nominations. The committee will then narrow down the nominations to the top 100 student workers, and from there select the top three workers. Of the top three finalists, the committee will determine the winner for Student Employee of the Year.

To thank student workers for their contributions, on April 15 the Career Center will sponsor a Student Employee of the Year luncheon at the Georgia Center for Continuing Education Conference Center and Hotel to honor the top 100 student workers and their nominators The Career Center invites campus departments to participate in Student Employment Week April 14–18. During this week, departments are asked to show their appreciation for the student workers.

“There are a lot of ways that people recognize their student workers, from a pat on the back to thanking them for a specific task, to taking them out to lunch, but one of the best ways to recognize your student employee is to nominate them for this award,” said Williams.
