Cholesterol screening
As part of Heart Health Month, the University Health Center will offer faculty and staff total cholesterol screenings Feb. 4–8 and Feb. 11–15 from 8–10 a.m. by appointment. The lipid profile will give information about HDL/LDL breakdown (the “good” and “bad” cholesterol) and triglycerides. Appointments will be limited to 75 participants. The cost is $15, and participants should not eat anything after midnight the night before the test. Participants also should drink plenty of water so they are fully hydrated at the time blood is drawn. Results will be given at the end of February by appointment. Call (706) 542-8690 to make an appointment. A current UGA ID or picture ID must be brought to the screening. Additional information is available online (www.uhs.uga.edu).

Call for First-Year seminars
The First-Year Seminar Program invites faculty to offer seminars in the 2008-2009 academic year. Sponsored by the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences and the Honors Program, the program features a selection of academic seminars under the heading FRES 1010 and 1020 designed to introduce new students to research, study and the intellectual life of UGA. All UGA faculty are invited to teach. To propose a seminar, complete the online form (https://ssl.franklin.uga.edu/fyseminar/proposal.php).

Proposals should include a title and brief description and should indicate the class period, day and semester in which faculty wish to teach and may be e-mailed to hruppers@franklin.uga.edu.

Lists of seminars taught in past years along with other information about the program are online (www.franklin.uga.edu/deans/hruppers/freshsem/index.htm).

Enrollment is open to all first-year students. Most seminars offer one credit hour toward graduation, enroll 15 students and meet for one 50-minute session per week. Two- or three-credit hour seminars also are possible. Faculty may teach a seminar on a pass/fail (FRES 1010) or traditionally graded A-F (FRES 1020) basis. Plans are to schedule two-thirds of the seminars in the fall term.

The Franklin College and Honors Program present on an annual basis three awards to outstanding seminar instructors, each carrying a research account of $1,000.

Creative, innovative seminars are welcome. Faculty may teach a seminar on their own or with other colleagues. The topic may lie within a single discipline or may cross disciplines. Seminars that reflect the diverse talents, interests and research skills of faculty at UGA are being sought.

LSEP grant proposals
The Office of the Vice President for Public Service and Outreach invites tenure-track faculty and all public service faculty members to submit research proposals related to the educational pipeline for Latino students. The Latino Students and the Educational Pipeline research grants will range from $2,500 to $5,000 and will be awarded in May. The deadline to submit proposals is April 4. Proposal criteria and eligibility requirements are online (http://outreach.uga.edu/publications).

Winter weather closing procedures
By policy, the university makes one of three announcements during inclement winter weather: UGA is open and operating on a regular schedule; UGA is closed; or UGA will delay opening until a specific time. An all campus e-mail is the primary means to distribute such announcements. The announcement also is posted to the UGA home page (www.uga.edu).

Up-to-date information is provided to Athens radio stations, University Cable Channel 15 and local cable channel 15. Announcements should be made by 6:30 a.m., unless inclement weather develops after 6:30 a.m. on a school/work day. Then, the same notification procedures are used. The entire inclement winter weather policy is available online (www.uga.edu/news/artman/publish/advisories.shtml).
