Some institutions lower their tuition
Several colleges and universities, including Duke, Yale, Pomona, Swarthmore and Stanford, have announced plans to join Harvard University and give middle-income students a tuition reprieve, Newsweek magazine reported. The schools’ plans include not asking students to pay more than 10 percent of their families’ annual income to attend. While some agree the financial aid will benefit students, some economists say the aid could hurt flagship public institutions by removing top students who were previously unable to afford an Ivy League education.

Settlement proposed for families of Virginia Tech shooting victims

The state of Virginia has proposed a $100,000 settlement for each of the families of the 32 people killed in the Virginia Tech shooting last April, The Chronicle of Higher Education reported.

The proposal, still being negotiated, was created to prevent families from suing the state. The proposal also will cover any medical and counseling expenses for families and survivors of the April 16 shooting. The families must decide whether to accept the deal. Those who do give up their right to sue the state, Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, Va., and others.
