Administrative Professionals Day conference

The annual Administrative Professionals Day conference will be held April 23 at the Georgia Center for Continuing Education Conference Center and Hotel.

Millicent St. Claire will present this year’s keynote address, “The Competitive Edge: Communication Skills to Produce Positive Results.” A seminar leader and inspirational speaker, St. Claire specializes in teaching adult learners to discover their hidden genius using accelerative learning methods.

Julie L. Cannon will be the luncheon speaker at this year’s event. A native Athenian, Cannon graduated from UGA with a degree in journalism. She is the author of Truelove and Homegrown Tomatoes as well as its sequels, ’Mater Biscuit and Those Pearly Gates.

Presented in conjunction with Administrative Professionals Week, the conference is open to administrative assistants, aides, executive assistants, office managers, office assistants, clerks, coordinators, secretaries and supervisors.

The conference will help participants focus on the tools and techniques to stay motivated, effective, and successful in today’s high-pressure work environment. Participants will have opportunities to network, make new acquaintances and visit exhibitors during the workshops and the luncheon.

The deadline to register for the conference is April 17. The cost to attend the conference is $75 per individual session, $99 for a session and the luncheon, $28 for the luncheon only or $150 for both sessions and the luncheon. For more information or to register, contact Teresa Nunn at (706) 542-3537 or teresa.nunn@georgiacenter.uga.edu. Information about the conference also is available online (www.georgiacenter.uga.edu/adminpros).

Service-learning showcase
The Office of Service-Learning will host a student-focused service-learning showcase April 22 in the Memorial Hall Ballroom from 10 a.m.–1 p.m. The showcase, entitled “Beyond Broad Street: Service-Learning in Action,” will highlight the students who participate in service-learning on UGA’s campus. The OSL encourages faculty members to consider the showcase as a possible venue when trying to find a time and space for students to present their final projects. The OSL is looking for student posters, displays, presentations and other methods of reflection that students do in their service-learning classes. For more information, contact Caroline Twiggs, twiggsc@uga.edu.

Call for conference papers
UGA’s Institute for Women’s Studies is accepting papers and proposals for its 2008 “Women, Rock! and Politics” conference, which will be held May 30–31.

The conference will feature feminist research on gender and contemporary music traditions, especially rock, pop, hip-hop, rap and folk, and is open to academics, musicians, fans and community members.

IWS seeks submissions including performances, paper presentations or group panels—particularly work that focuses on the intersections of race, gender, class, sexuality, disability and other dimensions of identities and politics.

All proposals that critically address the gendered dimensions of popular music will be welcome.

Proposals should be no longer than 250 words and should include name, e-mail, affiliation and audiovisual requirements for all presenters and panel members.

Submissions can be e-mailed to cuomo@uga.edu with the subject heading “Women, Rock and Politics.” Proposals are due by April 25.
