Brian Cummings

Brian Cummings, an assistant professor in the College of Pharmacy’s department of pharmaceutical and biomedical sciences, was elected as a councilor on the In Vitro and Alternative Methods Specialty Section of the Society of Toxicology. The Society of Toxicology is the leading organization dedicated to creating a safer and healthier world by advancing the science of toxicology.

Dan Laak, head diving coach, has been named diving’s National Coach of the Year by the NCAA.

Laak was honored for coaching Chris Colwill, SEC Diver of the Year, to an individual title and two runner-up finishes at the NCAA championship as well as coaching Hannah Moore of the women’s team to a fourth-place finish on 3-meter springboard at the NCAA Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships in Columbus, Ohio. Laak also was named diving’s National Coach of the Year in 2006.

David P. Landau, Distinguished Research Professor of Physics, has been elected as councilor for the Division of Computational Physics of the American Physical Society. He will serve a three-year term on the governing council of the 46,000-member society, a professional organization for physicists in academia, industry and national laboratories in the U.S.

The society publishes the most internationally prestigious journals in physics and organizes annual professional meetings, the last of which recently brought 7,000 scientists together in New Orleans.

Leigh Poole

Leigh Poole, associate director of intercultural affairs and director of international student life, has been selected as one of four national participants in the Fulbright International Education Administrators Program for Korea for two weeks in June.

The short-term Fulbright IEA seminars introduce participants to the society, culture and higher education systems of various countries through campus visits, meetings with foreign colleagues and government officials, attendance at cultural events and briefings on education.

Anneliese Singh, an assistant professor in the College of Education’s department of counseling and human development services, will receive the 2008 ‘Ohana Award from the Counselors for Social Justice for her work in affirming diversity and social justice.

Singh is the third faculty member in her department to win the national award in the past four years.

Sheryl B. Vogt, director of the Richard B. Russell Library for Political Research and Studies, has been appointed by Secretary of the Senate Nancy Erickson to serve on the advisory committee on the Records of Congress.

The committee was created in 1990 to advise Congress and the archivist of the U.S. on the management of the records generated by the national legislative body. The committee is comprised of the secretary of the Senate, the clerk of the House, the archivist of the U.S. and the historians of the Senate and the House, as well as appointed public members such as historians, political scientists, and administrators of legislative archives and public policy research centers.
