UGA Research Foundation to acquire local television station
The UGA Research Foundation has reached an agreement to acquire WNEG-TV, channel 32, from its current owner, Media General Inc. Transfer of the license for the television station, which serves northeast Georgia from studios in Toccoa, is subject to approval by the Federal Communications Commission. The station will be operated by the university through its Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication.

UGA shows off bioenergy work at national alternative fuel demonstration
From bicycle-powered light bulbs to algae bubbling in plastic bags, a field at the National Arboretum in Washington, D.C., was transformed into an alternative fuel demonstration site June 18. Almost 30 universities set up scaled sizes of their biofuels research under a circus-size tent in preparation for the second annual BioEnergy Awareness Days.
‘He brought glory to old Georgia’
Uga VI, UGA’s English Bulldog mascot, passed away June 27 from congestive heart failure in his hometown, Savannah. On June 30, a private funeral was held at Sanford Stadium for the mascot, who served from 1999-2008.
Arthur Horne named new dean of College of Education
Arthur M. (Andy) Horne, who has served as interim dean of the College of Education since Jan. 1, became permanent dean of the college July 1.
First Bill and June Flatt Professor in Foods and Nutrition appointed
Mary Ann Johnson, a foods and nutrition professor who has developed research-based programs focused on helping older adults eat nutritious meals, has been named the first Bill and June Flatt Professor in Foods and Nutrition in the College of Family and Consumer Sciences. Her appointment was approved June 11 by the University System of Georgia Board of Regents.
Parking services launches campaign to improve customer service
University Parking Services has launched a two-year campaign to improve customer service.

Slated to run until January 2010, the campaign includes projects ranging from having employees smile more to reengineering the North Campus parking deck to decrease wait times.
Education college marks its centennial
Nearly 800 people gathered to celebrate the College of Education’s 100th birthday at a festive centennial luncheon at the Classic Center in downtown Athens last month.
