India’s new universities to mark a departure from old model
Fourteen new universities scheduled to be established in India throughout the next few years will depart from the country’s old model by featuring less red tape and more academic freedom, the Indian Express reported.

In addition, the new universities will feature a semester system, private financial support and the freedom to offer faculty members incentives in addition to pay. It is expected that many of the changes will be incorporated into the country’s existing universities as well, the paper reported.

Court refuses to block team cuts at James Madison University

A three-judge panel refused a call from the sports advocacy group Equity in Athletics to force James Madison University to re-instate 10 sports teams it cut in 2006 to met gender equity rules under Title IX, the Harrisonburg, Va., Daily News Record reported.

The suit, which began in June 2007, still continues in court about whether or not the school was justified in cutting seven men’s teams and three women’s teams. The upcoming seasons marks the second year without men’s archery, cross country, gymnastics, indoor track, outdoor track, swimming and wrestling, and women’s archery, fencing and gymnastics.
