Ombudspersons program established
Furthering UGA’s commitment to creating a positive learning and work environment, an ombudspersons program has been established and three representatives have been named for students, faculty and staff.

Second annual Diversity Days celebration kicks off Sept. 8
The Office of Institutional Diversity will hold its second annual Embracing Diversity celebration, an institution-wide series of events to highlight the connections among all members of the university community.
Upcoming symposium will focus on safety during emergencies
“Responding to Emergencies on Campus: UGA and You,” a symposium on campus security, is scheduled for 8:30–11:30 a.m. Sept. 11 in the Chapel. The event is sponsored by the Office of Security and Emergency Preparedness and the Center for International Trade and Security. It is open free to the public.

It’s understandable for librarians to be enthusiastic when it comes to reading, but about owls?

An “Owl Prowl” at Memorial Park’s Bear Hollow Wildlife Trail is one of the diverse activities planned to celebrate The Big Read in Athens from Sept. 13–Oct. 26.
Uga VII’s reign opens with a victory
Before the Aug. 30 football victory over Georgia Southern University, Damon Evans, director of athletics, and UGA President Michael F. Adams slip the official collar on Uga VII, the new UGA mascot.
Finance and administration selects two for its ’08–’09 Fellows Program
Two employees in the Division of Finance and Administration have been selected as participants in the F&A Fellows Program. Now in its fourth year, the program offers the special opportunity for division staff to have meaningful work experiences in finance and administration throughout a period of six months (three months in each section). The first cycle began Sept. 1, and the second rotation begins after the first of the year.
Alumnus wins fellowship to study Mandarin in China
Recent UGA graduate Lee Moore has been awarded a two-year Language Flagship Fellowship from the U.S. Department of Defense’s National Security Education Program to study Mandarin in China. Moore received his master’s degree in comparative literature in May and his bachelor’s degree in comparative literature last year.
Study finds that walking helps elderly lessen disability risk
Older adults can decrease their risk of disability and increase their likelihood of maintaining independence by 41 percent by participating in a walking exercise program, according to a UGA study.
Vivian Fisher, associate vice president emeritus, dies
Vivian H. Fisher, who retired in March as associate vice president for public service and outreach after a 30-year career with UGA, died Aug. 30.
