‘All-hazards’ approach: University improves emergency preparedness capabilities
For UGA to cope effectively with an emergency on campus, three things must happen: Individuals must be prepared, the university must be prepared and a culture of security must be cultivated and embraced at UGA.

Three faculty named Georgia Cancer Coalition Scholars
Three UGA scientists—John Vena, Jason Zastre and Claire Robb—have been named by the Georgia Cancer Coalition as Distinguished Cancer Scholars for 2008-09. Together, they will receive $1.25 million over five years to support their research efforts through the coalition’s Distinguished Cancer Clinicians and Scientists program. The coalition selects scientists engaged in the most promising areas of cancer research and can strengthen the state’s research talent, capacity, infrastructure and funding.
Three selected for state’s first education policy fellowship
Three UGA employees have been named to the Georgia Partnership for Excellence in Education’s inaugural class of Education Policy Fellowship Program.
New program to mentor early-career faculty in obtaining research grants
A new program aimed at increasing research grants awarded to UGA’s early-career faculty is now accepting applications.

Freshmen sought to take part in Collegiate Learning Assessment
To coincide with implementation of the new General Education Curriculum this fall, the Office of Institutional Effectiveness is actively recruiting first-year students to participate in the Collegiate Learning Assessment. The CLA is being administered as part of a plan to assess student learning across the UGA curriculum.
Scholarship of Engagement Grants support state, international projects
The Office of the Vice President for Public Service and Outreach has awarded
15 Scholarship of Engagement Grants for the 2008-2009 academic year. The grants, ranging from $5,000–$6,000, will support eight projects internationally and seven projects in Georgia by academic and public service faculty members who combine teaching, research and outreach activities.
