University of Memphis offers buyout plan to 115 of its employees
Following approval from the Tennessee Board of Regents, the University of Memphis will offer 115 employees a buyout plan in a reaction to $6.7 million in budget cuts, according to the Memphis, Tenn.-based Commercial Appeal. The university is not releasing specifics on the offers, which include 40 faculty, 50 staff and 25 administrative positions. Eligible employees have 45 days to decide whether or not to accept the offer, which only applies to those employed longer than six months, the newspaper reported. It is the only such effort taking place at a Tennessee institution.

Educational association attacks no-politicking rules at U. of Illinois
Guidelines in place at the University of Illinois barring employees from showing political activity have come under fire from the American Association of University Professors, The Chronicle of Higher Education reported.

The rules, which restrict faculty, staff and graduate employees from wearing T-shirts and campaign buttons and attending political rallies, have had a “chilling effect” on the institution’s three campuses in Chicago, Springfield and Urbana-Champaign, said the group’s president, Cary Nelson, who is also a professor at the Urbana-Champaign campus
