Faculty and staff receive 2008–2009 Fulbright Scholar grants

Six UGA faculty and staff have received Fulbright Scholar grants for the 2008-2009 academic year.

Jeffrey Bennetzen, a professor in the department of genetics, is conducting research with the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics and the Rural Economy Institute, in Bamako, Mali, from August to November. His project is entitled “Analysis of Genetic Diversity in the Parasite Striga and Co-Evolution with its Cereal Hosts.”

John Carroll, a professor in the Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources, will lecture and conduct research at the University of Cyprus (Nicosia, Cyprus) and the Near East University (Lefkosa, Cyprus) from January to August.

Thomas Holland, director of the Institute for Nonprofit Organizations and a professor in the School of Social Work, will lecture on the “Principles and Skills for Effective Management and Governance of Non-­Governmental Organizations.” Holland is lecturing at Charles University (Prague, Czech Republic) from September to December.

David Leigh, a professor in the department of geography, will participate in a Joint Argentina-Uruguay Environmental Sciences award at the National University of La Plata in Argentina from March to July. He will study the environmental setting, late Quaternary stratigraphy and geomorphology pertaining to archaeological sites of the first Americans. Leigh also will present seminars to students and faculty and participate in field excursions.

Abdulahi Osman, an assistant professor in the department of international affairs, is lecturing and conducting research at the MS Training Center for Development Cooperation (Arusha, Tanzania) from July 2008 to May 2009. His project is entitled “Comparative Democracy and Governance; Post-Genocide Justice in the Rwanda United Nations Tribunal in Arusha and in the Gacaca Traditional Justice System.”

Leigh Poole, director of International Student Life and associate director for intercultural affairs in the department of intercultural affairs, was involved as a short-term seminar participant in June in the U.S.- Korea International Education Administrators Program.

The Office of International Education’s Global Certificate Program will showcase a panel of recent Fulbright scholars and professionals who will lead a training seminar entitled “The Fulbright Experience.”

Speakers will discuss the application process and provide insight, tips and advice. The class is Oct.16 from 9- 11 a.m. in the Training and Development Center.
