UGA to begin state’s first major in Arabic this spring semester
Algebra, alchemy, zenith, nadir: four words with something in common: they originate in the rich locutions of Arabic language. Arabic, spoken by more than 200 million people, has grown in popularity as Westerners have more reason to know and understand the Middle East and North Africa.

Examining an applicant’s complete portfolio, and not just the Graduate Record Exam score or undergraduate grade point average, is essential when selecting the best students for admission to doctoral programs, according to a faculty panel at a recent seminar sponsored by the Graduate School.
Senior fellow named interim director of Fanning Institute
Joseph W. Whorton Jr., senior fellow at the Fanning Institute and associate professor of public administration, has been named interim director of the Fanning Institute. His appointment by Art Dunning, vice president for public service and outreach, is effective Nov. 17.
A small piece of Latin America
A wall was recently installed at the Latin American Ethnobotanical Garden to give the garden a more authentic feel. The project was funded in part by a $141,000 grant received in 2006 from the Exposition Foundation.
