Regents increase student fees, health insurance premiums

The University System of Georgia Board of Regents meeting Dec. 3 in a special session by conference call voted to increase student fees and raise the amount employees pay in health insurance premiums to help meet an anticipated directive from state officials to increase the budget cut to 8 percent from the current 6 percent.

“We are facing an economic crisis of a magnitude unprecedented since World War II, but to date have been able to avoid the worst because of prudent planning by our budget team beginning about this time last year,” President Michael F. Adams said.

Experts have for some years worried that a national shortage of scientists, mathematicians and engineers has jeopardized the competitive edge the U.S. needs in an increasingly technological world. To address this, the University System of Georgia Board of Regents launched an initiative called Math + Science = Success.

Food for thought and hunger
More than 10 years ago a friend at Covenant Presbyterian Church asked Jonathan Arnold to volunteer at the Athens Area Homeless Shelter. The request was that he cook a full meal, buying the ingredients himself, cart it to the shelter on Barber Street and serve it to 18–20 guests.
First two apprentices graduate from Physical Plant program
The first two graduates of the Physical Plant’s apprenticeship program were recently certified by the U.S. Department of Labor and now have been promoted to permanent positions at Physical Plant. Alan Pannell and Chris Whitehead received their certificates in late October.
Eleven UGA students present their research at national biomedical conference in Orlando
For the second year in a row, a UGA undergraduate student won an outstanding presentation award at the Annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minority Students, the nation’s largest conference for underrepresented groups in biomedical sciences. This year’s conference, held Nov. 5-8 in Orlando, Fla., attracted more than 2,800 attendees
