| Indiana U. to run Internet 2 network | |||||||||||
| Indiana University has been chosen to run the Abilene network operations center, a super-fast fiber-optic data network connecting universities in Internet 2. Some parts of the network are expected to be running as early as November. The Abilene network, named for a frontier-era railroad terminus in Abilene, Kan., is expected to be completed next year. It will run so fast that it could transmit the entire contents of the Encyclopaedia Britannica in one second. |

NCAA reverses religious-observance scheduling policy |

| A recent campaign by religious colleges has forced the National Collegiate Athletic Association to give colleges the ability to avoid playing championship games on certain days for religious reasons. The action reverses a unanimous decision in April by the associations Division I board of directors to eliminate a requirement that colleges policies against Sunday competition be accommodated. A group of colleges, led by Campbell and Brigham Young Universities, circulated a petition to force the NCAA to reconsider. |
