University Optimist Club
The University Optimist Club meets on Wednesdays at 12:30 p.m. at the Faculty Center in Memorial Hall.
A youth and community service organization whose members are UGA faculty and staff, the Optimist Club offers such benefits as networking with other UGA employees, guest speakers and giving back to the community by participating in service projects. Swimming lessons
Recreational Sports will sponsor a swimming stroke clinic for adults. The first session is Sept. 8 through Oct. 8 on Tuesday and Thursday evenings. Registration is Aug. 24 through Sept. 4. Session II will be held from Oct. 20 through Nov. 19 on Tuesday and Thursday evenings. Registration is Oct. 5 through Oct. 15. The cost is $30 for students and $40 for faculty and staff. Registration is at the cashier’s window of the Ramsey Center.
Rec Sports will also offer a learn-to-swim program for children on Saturday or Sunday from Sept. 19 through Nov. 22. Registration is from Aug. 24 through Sept. 16 at the cashier’s window of the Ramsey Center. Cost is $30 for student dependents and $40 for dependents of faculty and/or staff. Campus tours
The UGA Visitors Center conducts campus tours Monday through Friday at 9:15 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3:30 p.m.; Saturday at 10:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. and Sunday at 2:30 p.m. All tours begin at the Visitors Center, located in the Four Towers Building. A reservation is required and can be made by calling 542-0842.

Designing online courses
The Office of Instructional Support and Development will conduct a seminar for faculty interested in designing online course components that support teaching learning. An organizational meeting will be held Sept. 2 from 10 to 11:50 a.m.
Four weekly meetings will be scheduled during fall semester. Participants will be expected to investigate topics before each meeting, discuss topics during meetings, apply principles learned to the development of online course prototypes and share experiences and prototypes electronically with other seminar members.

Docent volunteers
The Georgia Museum of Art is currently seeking volunteers for the docent program, which trains volunteers to lead tours of the museum’s exhibitions and assist in educational events and programs. No previous experience is required.A welcome party for interested volunteers will be held Sept. 21 from 10 a.m. to noon. Library orientation
The main and science libraries will hold orientation sessions through October. The sessions include instruction in GALIN and GALILEO and a tour of major service areas. All classes are open free to the public. No advance registration is required, but class size is limited to 30.
The Main Library will hold orientation Aug. 25 from 12:30 to 1:20 p.m, Aug. 28 from 8 to 8:50 a.m. and Aug. 31 from 2:30 to 3:20 p.m. Meet in the Instructional Services Room across from the circulation desk on the first floor.The Science Library will hold orientation Aug. 31 from 11:15 to 12:05 p.m. in Room 382. Nomination deadlines
Nominations for Research Professors and Research Professionals must be submitted to the appropriate dean by Sept. 30.
The deadline to forward seven copies of the college and school nominations for Research Professors and five copies of unit/department nominations for Research Professionals is Oct. 30. Nomination materials should be forwarded to the Office of the Vice President for Research, c/o Sandra Fuller, 627-A Boyd GSRC. For more information, call Fuller at 542-4750.

Bookstore extended hours
The University Bookstore’s normal business hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. During fall book rush, the bookstore will be open Aug. 24 from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m., Aug. 25 from 8 a.m to 8 p.m., Aug. 26 from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Aug. 27 from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Teaching and learning group
The Office of Instructional Support and Development will establish a teaching and learning group during the fall semester to support faculty members in an examination of teaching. Organizational meetings are scheduled Aug. 26 from 8 to 9:30 a.m. and Aug. 27 from 3:30 to 5 p.m.
Group members will be introduced to effective teaching practices, develop skills to investigate teaching and learning and apply knowledge and skills to current teaching situations.
Topics will include planning and organizing for teaching, effective instructional strategies, assessing teaching and learning and documenting teaching effectiveness.
Weekly meetings will be scheduled during the semester. Participation will require as much commitment as a two-hour course. Group members will be expected to investigate specific topics before each meeting, discuss topics during meetings, apply principles learned to their classes and share experiences via an electronic discussion group. University bowling league
The John Nixon Memorial University of Georgia Bowling League will hold a membership meeting Aug. 24 at 6:15 p.m. at Showtime Bowling Center, 555 Macon Highway.
Interested faculty, staff and graduate students, employees of Russell Research Center, the EPA, the Forest Service and other government employees with UGA working affiliations and retired UGA and federal government employees are invited to attend. For more information, call 542-1269.
