Kathryn R. Costello, a native Georgian who has more than 20 years experience leading fund-raising, alumni and public relations programs at major universities, has been chosen to be the first senior vice president for external affairs at UGA.
Costello comes to UGA from Rice University, where she has been vice president for university advancement. Her appointment is subject to approval of the University System Board of Regents.
I am extremely pleased and excited that Ms. Costello will return to her native state to serve the University of Georgia in this key position, Adams said. Kathy has an extraordinary depth of professional experience and possesses an outstanding degree of personal charm. I look forward to working with her in our institutional advancement efforts.
Costello, who also has been a vice president at the University of Maryland and Southern Methodist University, will be one of three senior vice presidents whose positions Adams created in a reorganization of UGAs top administrative structure. The other positions are senior vice president for academic affairs and provost, held by Karen A. Holbrook, and senior vice president for finance and administration, held by Allan W. Barber.
Costello will direct the UGA departments responsible for development, alumni relations, communications, government relations, strategic planning, institutional research and special events. She will begin work around Oct. 1.
A native of Jasper, Ga., Costello received bachelors and masters degrees in communication from the University of Kentucky. She completed most of the course work toward a doctoral degree in anthropology at UK and later studied in a Vanderbilt University doctoral program in public policy issues.
In her previous appointments, Costello managed fund-raising drives totalling more than $550 million.
