$18.7 million grant to improve control of parasitic disease
The UGA Research Foundation has received a five-year, $18.7 million grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to research ways to reduce the morbidity rate from the parasitic disease schistosomiasis in low- and middle-income countries in Africa, the Middle East and the Americas. Researchers will develop and evaluate research-based approaches and diagnostic tools to identify, control and even eliminate schistosomiasis where feasible.

Eminent Scholar will expand bioenergy research efforts
Harry Gilbert, who has worked extensively on carbohydrate enzymes while focusing primarily on how these biocatalysts contribute to plant cell wall degradation, has joined UGA’s Complex Carbohydrate Research Center as the latest Georgia Research Alliance Eminent Scholar. |
11,600 apply for admission through early-action program
UGA’s early-action admissions program continues to prove popular with prospective students, with some 11,600 applications submitted by the Oct. 15 deadline. About half of those applicants were notified in December that they were accepted to UGA, while most of the rest learned that a final decision had not yet been made and that they needed to submit additional material by the Jan. 15 regular-decision deadline. |
