Better bean: Scientists will use NSF grant to unlock soybean’s genetic code
For millennia, people have grown soybeans and turned them into many useful products. But when it comes to understanding why a soybean grows, blooms or produces, researchers are left with unanswered questions.

Researchers discover new fish species
While surveying fishes in Georgia’s Flint River, Byron and Mary Freeman noticed that a certain darter fish had a striking orange color in its fins—much different than the Blackbanded darter that is prominent in the southwest Georgia River.
Five faculty members named American Association for Advancement of Science Fellows
Five UGA researchers have been named Fellows of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Election as a Fellow is an honor bestowed upon AAAS members by their peers.
Man on a mission to defeat malaria kicks off lecture series
Physician-scientist Stephen L. Hoffman, a leader in the race to develop a vaccine that defends healthy people against malaria, opens the fourth annual “Global Diseases: Voices from the ­Vanguard” ­lecture series at 5p.m. Jan. 20 in the Chapel.
New program provides relationship, financial counseling to couples
A program set to begin next month will offer UGA faculty and staff the opportunity to address relationship and financial issues with counselors.

The Office of the Vice President for Public Service and Outreach has awarded four grants under the Poverty and the Economy Faculty Research Grants Program.

The department of recreational sports has an ongoing shoe recycling program that places donated new and gently-used shoes into the community.
