Arnett Mace

University’s chief academic officer will retire early next year
Arnett C. Mace Jr., who has been UGA’s senior vice president for academic affairs and provost since 2003, will retire early next year.

UGA President Michael F. Adams announced in his State of the University speech Jan. 22 that Mace will retire effective Jan. 1, 2010. Adams appointed Mace to the position permanently in March 2003 after he had served on an interim basis for six months.

‘Never forget’: Freedom fighter recounts how road toward equality was paved
Speaking before a sold-out crowd of about 500, U.S. Rep. John Lewis said to always remember how the road was paved toward equality. Lewis gave the keynote address at the sixth annual Freedom Breakfast held Jan. 16 at the Georgia Center for Continuing Education Conference Center and Hotel.
Nobel laureate will deliver spring Cancer Center lecture
A Nobel laureate whose insights have broadened scientists’ understanding of how cell division goes awry in diseases such as cancer will deliver the spring 2009 UGA Cancer Center lecture.
Retired faculty member will speak on university’s founding
In observance of the university’s 224th anniversary, Thomas G. Dyer, a retired UGA faculty ­member and administrator, will present the Founders’ Day Lecture at 3 p.m. Jan. 27 in the Chapel. Dyer will discuss “Finding the Founders and What They Founded: Reflections on the Origins of the University of Georgia.” The lecture is open to the public.
Employee Self-Service Web site now offers online retrieval of W-2 forms
Thanks to new developments on the Employee Self-Service Web site (employee.uga.edu), UGA workers can access copies of their W-2 forms from the past three years.
Senior Scholars promote engaged teaching, learning across campus
The 2008-2009 Service-Learning Senior Scholars, funded through a faculty development grant from the Office of Service-Learning, are working to enhance and expand service-learning and engaged teaching and learning across campus. In the program, five faculty members each designed a proposal to bolster service-learning and community engagement throughout the institution.
Legal symposium will examine dispute resolution
The School of Law will bring leaders in the arbitration field to campus Jan. 30 to explore future changes to the area of dispute resolution.
Two researchers honored at White House ceremony
Two UGA scientists have been awarded the highest honor bestowed by the U.S. government on scientists and engineers beginning their careers.
Liberal exchange: International students immerse themselves in study, community service as UEP Fellows
Five international students are studying at UGA as Undergraduate Exchange Program Fellows. Students in the UEP program are from southeastern and eastern Europe and Mongolia and spend one year in the U.S. for non-degree academic studies.
