Athletic Association gives UGA $6 million to support academics

Damon Evans

The Athletic Association will help the university cope with one of its harshest financial challenges in decades by contributing $6 million to support teaching and research over the next three years.

The association’s board of directors voted unanimously Feb. 4 to approve a request by Damon Evans, director of athletics, to provide $2 million a year for three years to support academic programs.

The Office of the Vice President for Public Service and Outreach honored seven faculty and two staff members at its 18th annual meeting and awards luncheon on Feb.12.
Scholarships available for upcoming BIO conference
The state of Georgia will host the 2009 BIO (Biotechnology Industry Organization) International Conference May 18-21 in Atlanta. The meeting is the first time that the biotechnology industry’s pre-eminent annual convention has been held outside of an internationally recognized biotech hub, such as Boston.

University Council votes to add more engineering majors to curriculum
At its Feb. 5 meeting, the University Council voted unanimously to offer three additional majors in engineering dependent upon approval by the board of regents.

The Graduate School has partnered with faculty in the sciences to launch the Interdisciplinary Life Sciences Program this semester.
UGA, Emory, Georgia Tech collaboration to begin with symposium
The inaugural Georgia Symposium on Nanotechnology in Infectious ­Disease will be hosted by UGA on Feb. 19. The symposium marks the start of a collaboration among UGA, the Georgia Institute of Technology and Emory University to transform Georgia into a major attractor and incubator for emerging nanotechnology-based industries, with a focus on the application of nanotechnology to infectious diseases.
Tribute to honor singer, songwriter Otis Redding
UGA will present a tribute to Otis Redding, the Georgia-born singer and songwriter best known for his hit “(Sittin’ on) The Dock of the Bay,” on Feb. 17 at the Georgia Center for Continuing Education, where the WUGA studios are located.
Staff Council officers re-elected for second term
All the current officers of Staff Council were re-elected for another term at the council’s Feb. 4 meeting.
One billion copies and counting: Central Duplicating celebrates 40th anniversary
The Central Duplicating Service has come a long way from the typing machines and paper master copies of its 1969 inception. The service has stayed in either the Business Service Building or the Business Service Annex but has transformed from off-set printing presses and mimeographs to a completely digital process with some of the most state-of-the-art technology available.
