Mountains of change: $6.7 million NSF grant will extend research headed by UGA in southern Appalachia
The National Science Foundation has awarded $6.7 million grant to a consortium of universities headed by UGA for research on the effects of climate change and urbanization in the southern Appalachian Mountains.

IAEA director general is named winner of 2009 Delta Prize
Delta Air Lines and the University of Georgia will present the 2009 Delta Prize for Global Understanding to Mohamed ElBaradei, director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency, during a ceremony on March 18 at 7 p.m. at the Georgia Center for Continuing Education Conference Center and Hotel.
Symposium to address ways to bridge global health care
The College of Public Health and the Biomedical and Health Sciences Institute will host the second annual Global Health Symposium, “Social Determinants of Inequalities in Health II: Continuing the Global Conversation,” March 24-25 at the Paul D. Coverdell Center for Biomedical and Health Sciences. Registration is $15; it is open to the public.
Robert Osborne announces guests for 2009 film festival
Actors Talia Coppola Shire, Fred Willard and Michael Hitchcock will join director Guy Hamilton, film restoration expert James C. Katz, film noir specialist Alan Rode and vice president of the Turner Classic Movies network Tom Brown as special guests at Robert Osborne’s Classic Film Festival from March 19-22 at the Classic Center.
Seminar explores role of faculty guidance in doctoral completion
Faculty guidance, a crucial element in doctoral completion, was the topic of a seminar, “Building Strong Mentoring Relationships in Doctoral Education,” held Feb. 11 at the Tate Student Center.
Biologist will discuss 21st-century conservation at Odum Lecture
Renowned scientist Gretchen C. Daily will be the keynote speaker at the annual Eugene P. Odum Lecture Seminar, sponsored by the Odum School of Ecology.
‘Berg Encyclopedia’ editor will deliver annual Snyder Lecture
Joanne B. Eicher, editor-in-chief of the Berg Encyclopedia of World Dress and Fashion, will deliver the 17th annual Darl Snyder Lecture on March 5 at 10 a.m. in the Chapel. The event is open free to the public.
Ecologist links cancer-causing toxins to unexploded munitions in oceans
During a research trip to Puerto Rico, UGA ecologist James Porter took samples from underwater nuclear bomb target USS Killen, expecting to find evidence of radioactive matter.
Educational psychology, instructional technology programs receive national award for online courses
Two programs in the College of Education have received a national award from the American Camp Association. The programs are interdepartmental collaborations that resulted in several online training programs for youth development professionals.
