Peanut scientists get $959,000 from state commission
At its March board meeting, the Georgia Peanut Commission awarded $1million to peanut researchers in Georgia, including $959,000 to UGA’s College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences.

University edges up in national rankings for federal research funding
Ending its downward drift in the national research rankings over the past four years, the University of Georgia this year rose from 103rd to 94th among all public and private universities and colleges based on federally financed research and development expenditures. |
University Health Center opens new entrance, addition
The new entrance and addition to the University of Georgia Health Center opened March 30. Completed ahead of schedule, the new facility features a spacious lobby with enhanced patient registration and business services. The communications and health promotion departments, including the John Fontaine Jr. Center for Alcohol Awareness and Education, has been relocated to an expanded area on the first floor. |
Weaver, Institute of Native American Studies Program director, named Franklin Professor
Jace Weaver, a professor of religion and law and director of the Institute of Native American Studies Program at UGA, has been named Franklin Professor of Religion and Native American Studies, effective July 1. |
Former U.S. House speaker to give 2009 Getzen Lecture
Former speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives Newt Gingrich will deliver the School of Public and International Affairs’ annual Getzen Lecture on Government Accountability. His lecture, “Effective American Policy in a Dangerous World,” will be given on April 7 at 3 p.m. in the Chapel. The event is open to the public |
National Historic Preservation Month honors landmark resources
The College of Environment and Design’s Graduate Historic Preservation program will celebrate April as National Historic Preservation Month with campus activities including exhibitions, a barbeque, lectures and a historic landscape tour. The events will involve faculty, students, staff, the Student Historic Preservation Organization and the Honor Society of Sigma Pi Kappa. |

Michelle Cliff, author of Abeng, No Telephone to Heaven and If I Could Write This in Fire, will give the 15th annual Andrea Carson Coley Lecture, “Everything is Now,” on April 17 at 12:30 p.m. in the Chapel. A reception honoring the Coley family will precede the lecture at 11:30 a.m. in Demosthenian Hall. |

Walk-in help: New partnership with local
VA clinic bolsters outpatient care
The College of Pharmacy has developed a unique second-year residency program in ambulatory care at the Veterans Affairs Outpatient Clinic on Highway 29 in Athens. The community-based facility is set up to provide primary care to veterans who cannot easily access the main VA hospital in Augusta. Approximately 4,000 ambulatory patients from the local population of 30,000 eligible veterans use the facility. |
