FY2010 state budget will offer ‘little relief’ from cutbacks at UGA
As anticipated, the state portion of the university’s 2010 fiscal year budget offers little relief from the cutbacks already experienced in fiscal year 2009, which amounted to approximately 10 percent. The University System’s fiscal year 2010 budget was cut by $236 million, which is an 11.7 percent reduction. The exact details of UGA’s 2010 fiscal year budget will not be known until the board of regents allocates formula funding and establishes tuition rates at its April meeting.

‘Lost,’ YouTube, ‘Saturday Night Live’ win Peabody Awards
Thirty-six recipients of the 68th Annual Peabody Awards were announced April 1 by the Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication. The winners, chosen by the Peabody board as the best in electronic media for 2008, were named in a ceremony in the Peabody Gallery on campus.
National honor: Two undergraduates named 2009 Udall Scholars for commitment to environment
UGA undergraduates Ashley Dronenburg and Mark Milby are among 80 students nationwide to receive the 2009 Morris K. Udall Scholarship. This is the first time UGA has had two students in one year receive the award that recognizes student leaders pursuing careers related to the environment or Native American policy.
FBI general counsel to deliver inaugural Talarico Lecture
Valerie E. Caproni, general counsel of the FBI, will highlight the inaugural Susette M. Talarico Lecture at UGA. Caproni’s lecture, “Current Challenges for the FBI—View from the General Counsel,” will be given in the Chapel at 3:30 p.m. on April 16. The lecture is co-sponsored by the School of Public and International Affairs’ department of political science and the criminal justice studies program.
Faculty, administrators discuss economic challenges at symposium
More than 50 faculty members spent a day and a half discussing “The Challenged University: Communication and Collaboration in Good and Bad Times” with members of UGA’s senior administration at the annual Academic Affairs Faculty Symposium —the latest in a series that has been held consecutively since 1991.
Dean of social work will deliver 2009 Mary Frances Early Lecture
Maurice Daniels, dean of the School of Social Work, will deliver the ninth annual Mary Frances Early Lecture April 15 at 4 p.m. in the Chapel.
Brown University professor to present Cantrell Lectures
David Mumford, University Professor of Applied Mathematics at Brown University and winner of the Fields Medal (often called the Nobel Prize of mathematics) will deliver this year’s James C. Cantrell Lectures.
Computer health, security fair to be held
Building on the success of last year’s Computer Health and Security Fairs, Enterprise Information Technology Services is partnering with the university’s Telecommunications, Electronics and Computer Services for the spring 2009 Computer Health and Security Fair.
EITS team receives Project of the Year Award
Enterprise Information Technology Services has received the 2008 Project of the Year Award. Given by the Atlanta chapter of Project Management Institute, the award recognizes EITS’ Strategic Planning and Project Management.
Alumni Association set to honor seven at annual awards luncheon
The UGA Alumni Association will honor former Athens mayor Upshaw Bentley, the late Vivian Fisher, former dean Sharon Nickols and former basketball coach Hugh Durham at its annual awards luncheon at noon April 17 at the Georgia Center for Continuing Education Conference Center and Hotel.
