Australian colleges, universities see big jump in international enrollment
International student enrollment in Australian colleges and universities jumped
20 percent over last year despite poor economic conditions, The Chronicle of Higher Education reported.

The figures were unexpected, with the largest source of new students (about 40 percent) coming from India. The surge may be coming from costs, the Chronicle said, as the Australian’s dollar relative worth to the U.S. dollar makes college education about 25 percent cheaper than it was a year ago.

UAE University now offers doctorates
United Arab Emirates University in Abu Dhabi will become the first native Persian Gulf university to confer Ph.D.s, The Chronicle of Higher Education reported.

Programs for Ph.D. candidates will begin in the fall. Officials expect about 20 students to enroll. The programs will confer degrees in areas the university currently offers to undergraduates, the Chronicle reported.

Begun in 1976, the university is the oldest government-sponsored higher education institution in the country.
