Words of wisdom: Commencement speakers offer new grads encouragement in tough economic times

U.S. Rep. Jack Kingston of Savannah told UGA’s Class of 2009 that they are not the first graduating class to see hard times. At the May 9 commencement ceremony in Sanford Stadium, he spoke about UGA’s history and the importance of learning from the past.
“We are living in challenging times, but the more we know about the past, the more optimism and security we have in our own futures,” he said. “These are tough times in which to graduate, but you will be better for it.”

Graduate programs continue to rank among nation’s best
UGA graduate programs remain among the best in the nation, according to U.S. News&World Report’s 2009 edition of America’s Best Graduate Schools. The College of Education ranked 30th and the School of Law tied for 35th. |
Grant will be used to research link between PTSD, substance abuse treatment services
The National Institute on Drug Abuse—one of 27 institutes and centers that comprise the National Institutes of Health—has awarded a faculty member in the School of Social Work $839,735 to research the connection between Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and substance abuse treatment services. |
National manhunt ends
for former faculty member
The national manhunt for George M. Zinkhan III, a former UGA faculty member, ended
May 9 with the discovery of his body near the Clarke-Jackson county line, according to reports by the Athens-Clarke County Police Department. Zinkhan had been sought in connection with three off-campus shooting deaths on April 25. |
President discusses budget at final ’08-’09 University Council meeting
The university should operate exactly the same in the next fiscal year as it has in this one and employees should not worry about losing their jobs, President Michael F. Adams told the University Council at its last meeting of the year April 21. |
CURO recognizes 2009 Promising Scholars during two-day campus visit
For the fifth consecutive year, UGA has recognized a group of Georgia high school seniors for their stellar academic records. The 16 students were named 2009 Promising Scholars at the annual spring symposium sponsored by the Honors Program’s Center for Undergraduate Research Opportunities in April. |

2009 Merage American Dream Fellowship
Tulsi Patel, an Honors student from Acworth who graduated in May with a bachelor’s degree in genetics, has received a 2009 American Dream Fellowship from the Merage Foundation. She is the fourth UGA student in a row to win the scholarship, which is awarded to academically outstanding undergraduate immigrants. |

Butler, former longtime director of alumni relations, dies
Long before computers and spreadsheets, Tyus Butler was a human database of information about UGA graduates.
If you wanted to know when someone graduated, where the person lived, his or her profession, and likely the names of the person’s spouse and children, Butler probably could tell you. If the person had relatives who graduated from UGA, Butler probably knew their names too. |
