Deryl Bailey |
Deryl Bailey, an associate professor in the department of counseling and human development services, is president-elect of the Association for Counselor Education and Supervision, a division of the American Counseling Association. He will serve as president of the national group beginning in the fall and serve until 2012.
Sarah E. Blackwell, an associate professor of Spanish, has been named the 2009 Professor of the Year by the Georgia chapter of the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese.
Blackwell was recognized for her active participation in programs that promote foreign language studies in Georgia’s educational institutions. She received the award at the chapter’s annual meeting in March. Blackwell’s primary areas of scholarly research include Spanish pragmatics, discourse analysis and applied linguistics.

Gauri Datta |
Gauri Datta, a professor in the statistics department, has been elected a Fellow in the Institute of Mathematical Statistics.
The fellowship honors scientists who exemplify outstanding research work and contribution to the field of statistics.
His research interests are Baysian inference, Bayes-Frequentist interface, likelihood inference, higher order asymptotics, development of non-subjective priors, small area estimation, linear models and survey sampling.
Vince Dooley, former head football coach and director of athletics, recently received the Lifetime Achievement Award from Auburn University.
Given annually by the Auburn Alumni Association, the award recognizes extraordinary accomplishments by Auburn alumni. To be selected for the award, nominees must have attained prominence in their professional careers, and they must be persons of integrity, stature and demonstrated ability.
An All-Star at Auburn in both basketball and football, Dooley earned a bachelor’s degree in business in 1954 and a master’s degree in history in 1963. He also served as an assistant football coach for Auburn’s 1957 national championship team before coming to UGA in 1963.

Larry Munson |
Larry Munson, longtime UGA football radio announcer, was inducted into the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association Hall of Fame during the organization’s 50th Annual Awards program May 2-4 in Salisbury, N.C.
Munson called Georgia football games from 1966 to the first two games of 2008.
Hall of Fame inductees are nominated by an NSSA panel and then voted on by their 700 sportswriters and broadcast members.
Wendy B. Zomlefer, senior research scientist and curator of the department of plant biology’s herbarium, received the 2009 Gaia Award of Excellence from the Florida chapter of the American Society of Botanical Artists in April. Zomlefer was honored for her botanical illustrations and research, with special recognition for her taxonomy text, Guide to Flowering Plant Families. |
