Immunobiologist appointed GRA Distinguished Investigator

Donald Harn

The College of Veterinary Medicine has hired a distinguished immunobiologist as part of its infectious diseases research team expansion.

Dr. Donald Harn comes to UGA as a Georgia Research Alliance Distinguished Investigator. His hiring is part of a GRA initiative to recruit research scientists who are well-regarded in next-generation vaccines and therapeutics research. He is formerly a professor of immunology and infectious diseases at the Harvard School of Public Health.

Twist in the wind: Dry autumns, winters may lead to fewer tornadoes in the spring
A new study by researchers at UGA pins down, possibly for the first time, how drought conditions in an area’s fall and winter may affect tornado activity the following spring.
UGA will host three-day conference for world’s top influenza researchers
UGA will host the third annual Immunobiology of Influenza Virus Infection conference July 26-28 at the Georgia Center for Continuing Education Conference Center and Hotel. The conference will bring together the world’s leading influenza researchers, including basic and applied science workers from academia, government and industry, who are seeking ways to translate new basic research findings about rapidly evolving influenza viruses into effective vaccines and therapies.
UGA’s College of Public Health earns full accreditation
The College of Public Health has been awarded full accreditation by the Council on Education for Public Health. The college is now one of 41 accredited colleges of public health in the nation and the sole accredited public health college in the University System of Georgia. It joins the Rollins School of Public Health at Emory University as the only accredited colleges of public health in Georgia.
Safety in numbers: Physical Plant’s renewed emphasis on security reduces workplace accidents
Wearing safety glasses, lifting heavy objects as a group, painting pipes bright yellow so workers don’t trip over them—the Physical Plant has been making major efforts to ensure that its workers stay safe.
New water resources policy professor named
Mark Risse has been named Georgia Power Company Professor of Water Resources Policy at UGA, according to Steve Wrigley, director of the Carl Vinson Institute of Government, where the position is based.
Finding their voices: Public housing residents share their stories online
You pass them everyday. They are all around, and their numbers are huge. In fact, more than a quarter of Athens residents live below the poverty line, but those 28 percent tend to suffer in silence. Often their power is limited, their stories untold.
Championship form
After winning javelin titles last month at the USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships and the NCAA Outdoor Championships, UGA junior Chris Hill will compete in the International Association of Athletics Federations’ World Outdoor Championships in Berlin, Germany, Aug. 15-23.
