Big discovery: Warnell researchers help find the second-smallest salamander in U.S.

Researchers from UGA’s Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources weren’t looking for anything new when they went exploring in the northeast part of the state. But they ended up making a big discovery of a tiny animal, finding a new species of salamander that could change what scientists know about some amphibians.

University will share in $1.7 million EPA award to clear the air
As part of the 2009 American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, the Environmental Protection Agency has awarded $1,713,235 to a team from UGA’s Engineering Outreach Service and officials from Athens-Clarke County and Washington County, a UGA Archway Partnership county.
Select Sustainable Tree Trust to donate $1 million in trees
The Select Sustainable Tree Trust has selected UGA to receive a $1 million tree donation to “re-green” and impact the university campus with large-scale, sustainable shade trees.
Environmental Protection Division cites UGA for incinerator permit violation
The State of Georgia Environmental Protection Division has cited UGA for operating three incinerators out of compliance with its air quality permit under the Georgia Air Quality Act.
Scholarship of Engagement grant program supports community projects
The Office of the Vice President for Public Service and Outreach has awarded eight Scholarship of Engagement grants for the 2009-2010 academic year. The grants, which range from $5,000 to $8,000, support projects by academic and public service faculty members who combine teaching, research and outreach activities.
Accounting school director awarded inaugural taxation chair
Benjamin C. Ayers, director of UGA’s J.M. Tull School of Accounting, has been named to the Earl Davis Chair in Taxation.
