Researcher receives $2.2 million NIH grant to study role of vitamin D levels in children
A UGA nutrition researcher has been awarded a $2.2 million grant to explore the role vitamin D plays in children’s health and the appropriate dose children should take as daily supplements to maintain healthy levels of vitamin D in their bloodstream.

College guide ranks UGA among top 25 public universities
UGA is ranked 21st among public universities and tied for 58th overall according to the U.S. News & World Report’s 2010 edition of America’s Best Colleges.
Research Foundation, U. of Puerto Rico grant license for glow materials
The University of Georgia Research Foundation Inc. and the University of Puerto Rico have granted an international, non-exclusive license for a portfolio of glow-in-the-dark pigments that can be designed to emit light in any color of the visible spectrum for nearly a day. Performance Indicator LLC of Lowell, Mass., acquired the license.
Professor pioneers new caviar farming method
Caviar is one of the world’s most prized delicacies, but overfishing has pushed wild sturgeon to the brink of extinction. A new, cost-effective and environmentally sustainable method for farming sturgeon pioneered by a UGA professor has the potential to protect wild sturgeon populations while creating a lucrative agricultural commodity.

With the slogan “Spread the Word, Not the Flu” the university is unfurling a campaign to educate students, faculty and staff about the H1N1 virus and upcoming flu season.
Food scientist makes water healthier
Health-conscious consumers already know the benefits of eating high-antioxidant foods like fruits, vegetables, beans and nuts. But a UGA researcher has uncovered a way to provide the same antioxidant benefits in a bottle of water.
Six international language instructors teaching on campus as part of federally funded program
Six language instructors from Pakistan, Afghanistan, Indonesia, Turkey and Bangladesh are at UGA under the auspices of the Fulbright Program and the Institute of International Education in New York.
‘Panic’ opens fall semester Music Business Program
UGA’s Music Business Program gave students and invited guests a headlining act to begin classes when lead singer John Bell of Athens-based jam band Widespread Panic took the Chapel stage for the program’s first lecture of fall on Aug. 18.
