Police Officer of the Year named
Crime prevention officer also an art education student
David Dodson

Cherilyn Williams, a third-year officer with the university’s police department, was named the UGA Police Officer of the Year for 1997-98 by Chief Chuck Horton. The law enforcement award was sponsored for the third year by the University Optimist Club.
Williams, originally from Comer, was commended by Horton for her involvement with crime prevention, particularly as a volunteer for women’s safety programs offered to student groups on and off campus.
Horton also singled out Williams as the officer responsible last year for catching a thief who had broken into several automobiles parked on campus. Williams made the arrest during a morning stakeout of one of the River Road parking lots. Horton said the man arrested in the case, a 40-year-old Athens resident, was charged with four counts of entering an auto. The police department believes as many as 40 other theft cases have been cleared as a result of the arrest.
Williams continues to work a patrol schedule, while pursuing a bachelor’s degree in art education. The University Optimist Club, which draws its membership from UGA faculty and staff, presented the award to Williams during spring quarter.
