Higher education, civic engagement top conference agenda
The Office of the Vice President for Public Service and Outreach will host the 10th annual National Outreach Scholarship Conference Sept. 28-30.

Panel discussion will focus on security threats in cyberspace
Nationally recognized experts will be on campus Sept. 11 to teach university and community members ways to prevent cyber terrorism during “The Growing Cyber Security Threat: From National Security to UGA,” a free panel discussion running from 10 a.m.–noon at the Chapel.
State of the art: Pharmacy South will be dedicated Sept. 10
The College of Pharmacy will hold a dedication ceremony Sept. 10 at 3 p.m. for its new Pharmacy South addition, built adjacent to the Robert C. Wilson Pharmacy Building.
Groundbreaking set for Butts-Mehre Hall
UGA will break ground on a cutting-edge renovation and expansion of Butts-Mehre Heritage Hall, the everyday home of the University’s Athletic Association and football team, at 4:30 p.m. Sept. 11
University rises in ranking of African-American students earning doctoral degrees
Diverse Issues in Higher Education ranked UGA 17th in the nation for doctoral degrees conferred upon African Americans, up from 18th in last year’s rankings.
Griffin student learning center opens
A sizeable crowd from the local community joined UGA President Michael F. Adams as well as other UGA faculty, staff and students from UGA’s Griffin Campus for an Aug. 26 dedication ceremony to mark the official opening of the new student learning center.
Diversity Days will spotlight dialogues
The third annual Diversity Days celebration, a university-wide series of events highlighting the differences and connections among members of the UGA community, will kick off Sept. 14.
Symposium to explore future of biomass-based fuels
Top scientists will provide insights about the scientific progress toward a future in which fuels and products are based on biomass at a symposium sponsored by the Complex Carbohydrate Research Center on Sept. 17 and 18.
2009-2010 Finance and Administration Fellows selected
Three employees in Finance and Administration have been selected as participants in the fifth year of the F&A Fellows Program. The fellowship offers the opportunity to rotate through two different finance and administration divisions over a six-month period (spending three months in each section). The first cycle began Sept. 1.
Good Catch: 4-H recycling project keeps plastic lines away from sea life, humans
Plastic fishing line may be useful for catching fish, but left in the water it can be deadly to turtles and other sea life. To encourage fishermen to recycle broken fishing line, 4-H’ers along Georgia’s coastline have installed used fishing line recycling collection bins.
Alumna wins two fellowships for doctoral studies at Columbia
Jessica Van Parys, who earned combined bachelor’s/master’s degrees in economics and a bachelor’s degree in political science from UGA in May, has been awarded a Jacob K. Javits Graduate Fellowship from the U.S. Department of Education and a National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship.
End-of-summer-dip
Adam Baker, Cassidy Campbell and Natalie Schmidt, all age 12, played in Legion Pool on Aug. 13, the last day the pool was open for the season.
