Jere Morehead selected to become UGA’s next provost

Jere Morehead

Jere W. Morehead, vice president for instruction and the Meigs Professor of Legal Studies at UGA, will serve as senior vice president for academic affairs and provost.

Morehead was chosen from among four finalists identified in a national search to fill the second-highest position in the university’s administration. He will succeed Arnett C. Mace Jr., who will retire on Jan. 1 after 18 years of service to UGA, with seven of those years as provost.

UGA receives nearly $6 million in stimulus funds for energy retrofits
Federal stimulus dollars will once again be flowing to the University of Georgia, this time to upgrade energy systems and make them more efficient. The university has been awarded $5,942,845 for utility system improvements at its main campus in Athens, its extended campus in Griffin and its Marine Institute facility on Sapelo Island.
Family researchers receive $5.9 million grant
UGA researchers have been awarded a five-year, $5.9 million Core Center of Excellence grant from the National Institute on Drug Abuse to address the ways genetic predispositions combine with family and community environments to forecast drug use, drug abuse and risky sexual behavior among children, adolescents and young adults.
Waste not: University licenses innovative technology to make fuel from dead forests and agricultural waste
An innovative process for turning waste biomass—such as dead trees, agricultural waste and lumber byproducts—into a liquid fuel to power conventional engines has been licensed by the University of Georgia Research Foundation Inc. to Tolero Energy LLC, a private biofuels company based in Sacramento, Calif. The technology represents a leap forward for the biofuels industry: the ultra-low-sulfur biofuel does not require additional refinement or processing before blending with biodiesel and petroleum diesel.
Former Franklin associate dean will head international education
Kavita Pandit, a high-level administrator and professor at the State University System of New York, has been named the associate provost for international education at UGA, effective Nov. 1.
Pharmacy South dedicated
A Sept. 10 ribbon-cutting ceremony officially opened Pharmacy South, the $44 million, 93,288-square-foot addition to the College of Pharmacy.
