University group releases its report on sustainability efforts
A working group of faculty, staff and students at UGA has released a report cataloguing the university’s efforts to promote sustainability and making proposals to enhance those efforts across campus..

Speaker: Economic crisis offers new opportunities for educators
“We are in a historic moment for education reform,” Bob Wise, president of the Alliance for Excellent Education, told more than 100 of the state’s top education leaders and policymakers at the second annual Education in Georgia: A State of the State Report on Oct. 1.
Inaugural Ljungdahl Lecture to be held Oct. 23
Steven W. Ragsdale, professor of biological chemistry at the University of Michigan, will deliver the inaugural Lars G. Ljungdahl Lecture Oct. 23 at 3:30 p.m. in Room C127 of the Davison Life Sciences Complex.
Legal scholar to discuss how law affects official government action
Frederick Schauer, Harrison Distinguished Professor at the University of Virginia, will deliver the School of Law’s 105th Sibley Lecture. Entitled “When and How (If at All) Does Law Constrain Official Action?,” the lecture will take place Oct. 28 at 4:30 p.m. in the Hatton Lovejoy Courtroom. It is free and open to the public.
UGA will host conference of world’s top fiber researchers
Many of the world’s top fiber researchers will be on campus Oct. 28-30 discussing their research in the use of fibers in areas ranging from biomedical applications to the creation of “smart surfaces” that can respond to a variety of stimuli.

Open enrollment for health benefits to begin; Indemnity plan eliminated
UGA employees will have from Oct. 26 until Nov. 20 to make changes to their health and dental benefits that will go into effect Jan. 1.
Editor of the Year to deliver annual McGill Lecture
An editor who is leading the nation’s journalists through turbulent times will deliver this year’s McGill Lecture. Martin Kaiser, who is president of the American Society of News Editors, will speak on “Leading Journalists in 2009—and Beyond.”
