From atoms to ecosystems: $2.6 million federal stimulus grant will bring
new jobs, research projects to SREL

A $2.6 million federal stimulus grant from the U.S. Department of Energy will bring new jobs to the Savannah River Ecology Laboratory, the UGA research facility near Aiken, S.C.

The grant for seven new and five continuing research projects will create 12 new full-time jobs and allow approximately 16 UGA research professionals and technicians to retain their full-time positions.

Disease experts headline Conference on Drug Discovery Nov. 5 at Georgia Center
UGA’s Center for Drug Discovery will host its second Conference on Drug Discovery on Nov. 5. The event features three renowned experts on HIV, hepatitis C and inflammatory diseases: Raymond Schinazi of Emory University, Jeffrey Glenn of Stanford University and Jilly Evans of Amira Pharmaceuticals.
University to host national conference on water, drought and environmental justice
UGA will host the “Water-Ecosystem Services, Drought and Environmental Justice” conference Nov. 9-12.
President of Lumina Foundation to give 21st McBee Lecture
A prominent advocate of expanding access to higher education will be the speaker for the 21st annual Louise McBee Lecture on Nov. 12 at 11 a.m. in the Chapel.
Former law dean appointed faculty athletics representative
David E. Shipley, a law professor and former dean of the law school, will succeed Jere W. Morehead, vice president for instruction, as faculty athletics representative effective July 1. In September, Morehead was named senior vice president for academic affairs and provost effective Jan. 1.
New course designation will help identify service-learning classes
A new designation for courses is helping students not only identify which classes contain elements of community engagement, but how pervasive those elements are.

A series of events commemorating the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall will be held on campus Nov. 5-11.

UGA exhibits ag research at Sunbelt Expo
Visitors to the 32nd annual Sunbelt Agricultural Exposition learned about the latest agricultural equipment, technology and information firsthand Oct. 20-22. They also got to watch college deans go udder-to-udder in a milking contest, and witness the birth of baby roaches.
Two from UGA selected for inaugural leadership institute
Two department heads from UGA have been selected to participate in the University System of Georgia’s first Executive Leadership Institute, a program to enhance leadership among academics.

In the struggle to keep students from dropping out of school, UGA researchers are finding that how students view time and rewards plays a role in why some students quit on their educations.
