Gary D. Moore, who has been associate registrar since 1977, has been chosen to be the universitys new registrar.
Moore has been acting registrar since July 1, when Bruce Shutt retired after 23 years as registrar. His appointment to the position permanently is effective immediately, following approval by the University System Board of Regents, says Dwight Douglas, vice president for student affairs.
As associate registrar, Moore has supervised the daily operation of the registrars office and its staff of more than 20 people. He implemented a customer service representative concept in the office, and has been responsible for producing all of UGAs official enrollment reports.
Moore helped design and implement the online OASIS student information system that enables students to access records from any computer lab on campus and from remote sites via modem. Students use the system to draw up class schedules and register for classes.
As the UGA official responsible for academic certification of athletes, Moore developed a tracking system to ensure that athletes are satisfactorily fulfilling NCAA academic requirements. He also developed a computer application to calculate students credit hours and academic averages when they appeal the loss of the HOPE scholarship.
Douglas says Moore was chosen from a pool of exceptionally strong applicants.
Many of the candidates had considerable experience, but the screening committee felt that we have the very best candidate right here in Gary Moore, Douglas says. I concurred with that evaluation, and we are very pleased that he will be our new registrar.
Before joining UGA in 1977, Moore was registrar and director of admissions at Gordon Junior College and assistant registrar and assistant admissions director at Georgia Southwestern College. He received bachelors and masters degrees in biology from Georgia Southwestern.
Moore is active in the national, regional and state professional associations of collegiate registrars and admissions officers. He has made presentations at meetings of each group and was chair of the Georgia groups program committee.
He was chair of a joint committee of the national association and the NCAA that published an NCAA eligibility guide. He also wrote a monograph for the national group on studentenrollment certification and chaired the national associations committee for non-traditional education.
