Student-worker orientation
To accommodate the large number of temporary and student employees hired during fall quarter, the training and development department will conduct additional orientation sessions:

Retirement planning
Staff Benefits will offer Optional Retirement Plan (ORP) information sessions for new faculty Sept. 25 from 3 to 5 p.m. and Sept. 26 from 9 to 11 a.m. in the Staff Training and Development Building, 315 S. Thomas St. Representatives from American Century Investments, Fidelity Investments, TIAA-CREF and VALIC will be available to discuss the plan. For more information, call 542-1814.
Writing workshop
The Office of Instructional Support and Development will conduct a series of workshops--open to all faculty members--to encourage faculty to redesign their course syllabi to include more writing assignments and to discuss responding to and assessing student writing. The first workshop is Oct. 29 from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in Reception Hall of the Tate Student Center. It will feature rhetoric and composition scholar Patricia Bizzell, professor of English and Director of Writing Programs at the College of the Holy Cross.

The workshops are held in conjunction with the Franklin College's Writing-Intensive Pilot Program and with additional support from the English department and the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences. Language classes
The Office of International Development will offer beginning conversational Japanese and Spanish language classes to faculty members on a first-come, first-served basis. Japanese classes will be held Tuesdays and Thursdays starting Sept. 16 from 12:10 to 1 p.m. in 220 Joe Brown Hall. An optional lab will be held Fridays from noon to 1 p.m. Spanish classes will be held Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays beginning Sept. 16 in 201 Candler Hall. WebCT workshop
University Computing and Networking Services and the Office of Instructional Support and Development will offer WebCT workshops during fall quarter. Intramural volleyball
Recreational sports will hold an organizational meeting for intramural volleyball Sept. 22 at 7 p.m. in the volleyball arena of the Ramsey Student Center. The entry fee--including a $10 forfeit fee--is $40 per student team and $50 per faculty staff team. Divisions are men's, women's, co-rec and faculty/staff. Sign-ups are Sept. 23 from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sept. 24 from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in room 226 of the Ramsey Center. For more information, call 542-5060.
GLOBES reception
The university's Gay, Lesbian or Bisexual Employees and Supporters organization will sponsor a reception to welcome new and returning faculty, staff, students and friends Sept. 25 from 5:30 to 8 p.m. upstairs at the Globe, corner of Lumpkin and Clayton streets. Bowling league
The John W. Nixon Memorial University Bowling League will hold a team meeting Sept. 15 at 6:15 p.m. at Showtime Bowl,
555 Macon Highway. League play begins Sept. 22. League membership is open to faculty, staff, graduate students; employees of the Russell Research Center, forest service, EPT and other government institutions with working relationships with UGA; retired university and government employees and their immediate family
