Advising program wins national award

The academic advising program for the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences has been selected a national winner for excellence by the National Academic Advising Association.

The award will be presented in October during ceremonies in Kansas City, Mo.

"Our advisers are all bright, well educated, interesting people who have really earned this award," says Ann Crowther, the associate dean of the college who oversees the college's advising and graduation offices. "If I had to point to a single reason that I believe the award is deserved, I would say it is because everyone in this office--the coordinator, the advisors and the support staff--truly care about the students and make decisions about what to do and how to do it with the students in mind."

Students in arts and sciences work with professional advisors during their first two years and are then transferred to faculty advisors in their departments for their junior and senior years. The award was given "in recognition of innovative and/or exemplary practices that have resulted in the improvement of academic advising services."

In addition, the advising program's World Wide Web site was named a national winner in the general publications category.
