The ARCO chamber orchestra , under the direction of violinist Levon Ambartsumian, will open the 18th season of 2nd Thursday concerts with a performance on Oct. 9 at 8 p.m. in Hodgson Hall of the Performing Arts Center.
The unusual program will consist of music for two soloists accompanied by string chamber orchestra, with several School of Music faculty members as the featured soloists. Faculty members performing will be David Starkweather, cello; Dwight Manning, oboe; William Davis, bassoon; Kenneth Fischer, saxophone; Fred Mills, trumpet; Shakhida Azimkhodjaeva, violin; Milton Masciadri, double bass; and Levon Ambartsumian, violin.
Doctoral student Victor Uzur will join Starkweather to perform Vivaldi's Concerto in G minor for Two Cellos. Also on the program are Vivaldi's Concerto for Oboe and Bassoon in G major, Rivier's Concerto for Alto Saxophone and Trumpet, and Bottesini's Passione amorose for Violin and Double Bass.
Guest artist Gennady Freidin will perform with Ambartsumian in the Sinfonie Concertante for Violin and Viola by Mozart. Freidin has been principal violist of the Kirov Opera Orchestra and the Moscow Soloists Chamber Orchestra.
He is currently teaching and performing internationally and is contracted as the special soloist for the Montpellier Philharmonic Orchestra in France. He has premiered several important new pieces for viola.
Tickets for this performance are available for $9 and $12 ($5 for students) at the Performing Arts Center box office (542-4400). Box office hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, and two hours before events.
