University bookstores challenged
A North Carolina senator is taking aim at campus bookstores in a new piece of legislation, arguing that they compete unfairly with off-campus counterparts.
The Senate Committee on Small Business is considering the bill, S. 2490, which was introduced by Sen. Lauch Faircloth (GOP). The measure would bar higher-education institutions from forcing students to buy goods or services from on-campus businesses and from withholding course information, such as required-reading lists, from off-campus bookstores. If the measure is approved, colleges that do not comply will lose federal money and financial aid for their students.

Curbing alcohol abuse
Virginia Tech President Paul Torgersen has written faculty members asking them to help curb alcohol abuse among students by ending the practice of giving less homework on weekends. In a memo to the university faculty, Torgersen urged professors to avoid remarks in class that appear to condone excessive drinking and to send a message to students that “the abuse of alcohol is not just a rite of passage to be tolerated.”
A university spokesperson said the memo was circulated throughout the entire university, and not just to health-services personnel, because the president believes that everyone should help students avoid excessive alcohol consumption.
