New telephone exchange planned

The campus community will have to get used to dialing a new telephone prefix this month. The exchange 583- will come into use later in October in addition to the long-standing prefix 542- for UGA phones.
The new exchange is made necessary by the university’s growth, combined with the proliferation of fax machines and computer modems across the campus, which have used up all available numbers in the 542- exchange.
According to Judy Howell, manager of telephone services, on-campus users may continue to place their calls using only five digits, dialing the 2 plus the remaining four digits for 542- numbers or the 3 plus the remaining digits for 583- numbers, regardless of the exchange from which they are calling.
Off-campus users will continue to dial the full seven-digit number to reach a campus telephone.
Phone numbers with the new exchange will be assigned to new campus telephone lines as they are installed, in all campus offices.
